A record six new entrants today join the Miele Guide list of the top 20 restaurants in Asia, led again by Iggy’s, a modern European establishment in Singapore. Restaurant Andre, Singapore (2nd), is the highest addition to the list. The others are Mr & Mrs Bund, Shanghai (7th); Pierre Gagnaire a Seoul (8th); 8-1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Hong Kong (13th); Dakshin, Chennai, India (16th); and Sarong, Bali (18th). “The 2011/2012 Top 20 list hints at a growing emergence of restaurants that marry sophisticated Western culinary techniques with Asian flavors,” the organizers said in an e-mailed release. “Our region’s top, promising chefs have utilized local ingredients in their elegant creations, such as black chicken egg and duck’s tongue at Restaurant Andre. Explore here Restaurants in Bangalore ” Ignatius Chan’s Iggy’s has topped the list in three of the four years of its existence, with L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Hong Kong, the only other winner. The second placing for Andre Chiang’s Restaurant Andre, which opened in October 2010, makes him the chef to watch in the coming year, Miele said. The guide features 500 restaurants across 17 countries: Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Japan is among the nations without an establishment in the Top 20. The “Miele Guide” was founded in 2008 after Asian restaurants failed to make a mark in the San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, of which I am a panel chairman. The winners are picked by a combination of critics and diners across Asia. The results were announced at a dinner in Singapore.
